Digital technologies are rapidly evolving and becoming ever more ubiquitous, creating unprecedented challenges, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. As technology becomes more deeply embedded in our social structures and daily lives, its impacts on human rights and democratic processes often become entrenched before their full implications can be understood or addressed. This challenge is amplified by the concentration of technological power in the hands of a few dominant corporations and state actors.
This situation creates two critical needs:
The purpose of CommonEdge is to focus on ways of addressing these two urgent and critical needs.
We plan to do this by undertaking research activities and investigations, and collaborating on strategies that bring balance to our digital worlds, ensuring future generations enjoy the benefits of technologies, without becoming subservient to its power.
Activity Areas
We are currently focused on the following activity areas:
CommonEdge is very much a seed, and our work may extend outside the above activity areas, especially as we grow, and become influenced by what we learn and what challenges need to be addressed.
CommonEdge was founded by Sam de Silva who works at the overlaps of technology, human rights and info/communications.
The motivation to establish CommonEdge is to enable collaborators to come together to take on challenges that require a multi-disciplinary approach, and that one person is not able to adequately solve.
CommonEdge aims to a lean operation, and is happy to work with other specialists, organisations and funders to explore and solve the challenges caused by current and emerging tech.
