An opportunity to revamp Sri Lanka’s Online Safety Act?

Sri Lanka’s Presidential election has sent a clear message to the old guard: the massive numbers of citizens responsible for the Aragalaya (the people’s struggle) are wanting an end to the way things have been in the country and are pinning their hopes on the new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to deliver genuine change.

The article “No Presidential Candidate Has Pledged to Repeal the Online Safety Act” published in Groundviews in mid September, a few days before the Presidential elections, gives insights into the various political views on the OSA. While the article is pessimistic on what a potential leader will do, it does stress the ongoing role civil society must have to ensure tech policies and laws respect fundamental freedoms while holding the platforms accountable.
